Exponential functions, quadratics review, coordinate geometry, and Desmos calculator strategies
Jane came in with strong computation skills and a confident setup for exponential functions. This session we sharpened quadratic word-problem setups and built real fluency with the Desmos calculator, getting them ready for tomorrow's SAT. The foundation is solid, with a couple of clearly identified focus areas.
In this session
What We Covered
Exponential functions — growth versus decay, and the formulas behind them (the y = ab^x form and compound interest).
Quadratics review — vertex, intercepts, and how these show up in SAT word problems.
Coordinate geometry — distance and midpoint between points.
Desmos calculator strategies — graphing systems of equations, statistics, linear regression with the table feature, sliders, and the fraction/decimal toggle.A big efficiency win for the test: using the calculator to check work and speed up coordinate-geometry questions.
SAT practice problems worked through together in Desmos, with the rest assigned as homework.
Understanding
How Jane Did
What Went Well
Setting up exponential functions — "solid on the setup."
Correctly applied the decay formula (using 0.88 for a 12% decline).
Sorted out distance versus midpoint after a quick clarification.
Reliable, accurate computation once a problem is set up.
Took to the Desmos tools quickly — a strong visual, hands-on learner.
What We're Still Building
Interpreting quadratic word problems — translating the words into the right setup.
Reading exponential growth rates (a 1.15 factor means 15% growth, not "add 1.15").
Why compound interest uses (1 + rate).
The pattern
Mistakes & Patterns
The recurring theme is word-problem setup and interpretation, especially for quadratics — not the math itself.
Computation and formula application are a genuine strength once the problem is set up correctly.
Across sessions, Jane is stronger with direct computation than with translating word problems — a clear, workable focus going forward.
To do before the exam
Homework
SAT Desmos practice
Due before the SAT, 06.June.2026
Finish the remaining SAT Desmos practice problems (10 of 14 left).
Focus on linear-regression table setup and graphing systems of equations.

What You Can Do
Nothing is needed from you right now. The best support before tomorrow is a calm evening and a good night's sleep. Jane is well prepared, knows where to focus, and has a clear homework plan to finish tonight.
Looking ahead
Next Session
After the SAT, we'll do a debrief and review the score together, then target the specific areas the test surfaces. Longer-term planning will follow the results and Jane's college timeline.
